The Olympics bring international focus to East London, an area that was never on the tourist map. As the games organizers are preparing London for the Olympics, this neglected area is being regenerated and renovated with many new exciting projects. Although many of the main events are held around Stratford, there are also events in Greenwich and other areas around East London. If you are visiting the UK for the games you can find many hotels in London that are within a short distance from the Olympic Village.
Canary Wharf
Canary Wharf is one of the most modern areas of East London. It enjoys good transport links, thanks to the Docklands Light Railway that connects it to Central London, to Stratford for the Olympics, and to Greenwich. Canary Wharf is located by the River Thames and the boats that travel along the river are a more pleasant way to move around than crowded buses. Canary Wharf has good shopping, there are trendy restaurants and bars along the river, and the hotels here are conveniently located near the Olympic events.
Greenwich
Greenwich is another good area to stay in. It is a picturesque part of London and has two great parks: the Greenwich Park and the nearby Blackheath that offer man opportunities for spending a day out. Greenwich has many tourist attractions: the Royal Observatory, the Cutty Sark ship and the National Maritime Museum. The Greenwich Market is a popular place to shop at market stalls and small boutiques. Greenwich is located in South East London but has good public transport connections to other parts of London. Hotels around this area are good alternatives to hotels in the busy parts of Central London.
Travel Tips
If you are travelling to London for the Olympics, book your hotel room as far in advance as possible. The Olympic weeks are going to be a busy time in London as crowds of visitors come to the city for the games. Many hotels raise their prices for the duration of the Olympics and the best way to avoid high prices is to make your plans early. Wherever you stay in London, you can travel to all the Olympic events on public transport. The London Underground (the Tube) covers most parts of London and the Docklands Light Railway serves the areas around the Olympic Village.
